Common Insulation Material Used For Gas Pipeline

1. Polyurethane Foam (PUF)

Features: Low thermal conductivity (approximately 0.022-0.033 W/m·K), excellent insulation performance, available in integrally cast or prefabricated shell and pipe forms.

Applications: Outdoor buried gas pipelines and central heating pipelines, commonly found in “direct-buried insulated pipes.”

Advantages: High strength, corrosion protection, and excellent moisture resistance.

2. Polyethylene/High-Density Polyethylene (PE/HDPE) Protective Layer + Polyurethane Insulation

Mostly used for underground gas pipelines, the outer sheath provides waterproofing and corrosion resistance.

3. Rubber-Plastic Insulation (NBR/PVC)

Features: Flexible, moisture-resistant, and easy to install.

Applications: Generally used for indoor low-pressure gas pipelines (typically where temperature differences are minimal and only condensation protection is required).

4. Rockwool/Mineral Wool Shell and Pipe

Features: High-temperature resistance (above 600°C) and excellent fire resistance.

Applicable to: Areas requiring fireproofing and heat insulation, or gas pipelines near high-temperature sections such as boilers and heating furnaces.

A protective layer of aluminum foil or iron sheet is required to prevent water absorption and failure.

5. Calcium Silicate Insulated Pipe Shell

Features: High strength, pressure resistance, and temperature resistance of 650-1000°C.

Applicable to: High-temperature gas pipelines (such as gas pipelines near industrial furnaces), or where pressure resistance and fire protection are required.

6. Aerogel Composite Felt

Features: Ultra-low thermal conductivity (approximately 0.015 W/m·K), high-temperature resistance, and thin thickness.

Applicable to: Gas pipelines in limited space or with extremely high energy efficiency requirements.

Selection Principles

City gas pipelines (normal temperature, medium and low pressure): Generally do not require complex insulation. For cold regions or for frost protection, polyurethane direct-buried insulation pipe or rubber-plastic materials are often used.

For industrial high-temperature gas pipelines: Rock wool, calcium silicate, or aerogel are recommended, offering both fire resistance and thermal insulation.

Buried gas pipeline: polyurethane foam + polyethylene outer sheath is the most common combination.
